Microalgae for food byproduct valorization Udbyder Vejleder Sted København og omegn BackgroundFood industry generates large amounts of byproducts which improper handling leads to environmental problems. These high quality wastes are often poorly valorized for biogas production. Alternatively, we can produce microbial biomass with high value in the feed and food markets, thereby enabling circular economy in the food sector. Microalgae biomass can generate nutritive proteins and essential fatty acids – with quality equal or exceeding those of traditional references like soy of fishmeal – at a lower cost than traditional protein production chains. In this project we will investigate the use of microalgae to valorize byproducts from slaughterhouse byproducts. When possible, we will follow a biorefinery approach, allowing for multiproduct production from residual streams.AimTo screen different microalgae strains for valorization of residual streams from slaughterhouses with and without pre-treatments.ApproachThree different microalgae strains will be screened for cultivation in residual resources from meat processing industry with and without pre-treatments. Best combinations of algae strain and residual stream will be upscaled to 1 L photo bioreactors, where microalgal growth, biomass composition (proteins, lipids, etc.) and effluent quality will be monitored.
