From your desktop to the real world – assessing the performance of full scale implementation of integrated control strategies for reducing overflows from combined sewers Udbyder Vejleder Sted Midt- og Vestjylland When sewer systems are overloaded by excess rainfall, untreated wastewater is discharged to the environment through Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO). A cost-effective solution to reduce CSO volumes (and thereby their negative impacts to the environment) is the use of online control strategies, which optimize the existing storage volume across the sewer network. During the latest decade, integrated control strategies, combining real-time measurements, forecast on future rainfall, and forecast uncertainty have been developed. The performance of these strategies has been widely assessed by several simulation studies. After all these development years, the control is now fully operative in the city of Kolding. The question is then: how is the control doing in the real world? This project will investigate the performance of the integrated control in Kolding by comparing results from simulation of detailed hydrodynamic models (Mike Urban) against the data from the actual system.
